Why is the polar region colder than the equator region?

I know the traditional explanation that sun rays takes longer to travel the polar region than the equator region due to earth cirference. But isn't it arguable that the difference in distance that sun has to cover to reach polar region is negligible when compared to distance between earth and sun?
